We look after all of Westminster’s parks and gardens, open spaces, social service sites and highways sites. The character of the parks varies greatly, from the busy West End parks, such as Soho Square Gardens, Leicester Square and Berkeley Square to the more community based parks, such as St. John’s Wood Church Grounds Garden, Paddington Street Gardens and Porchester Square Gardens. We also maintain Marble Arch and Hyde Park Corner, at either end of the busy Park Lane.
Our responsibilities are the provision of the grounds maintenance and to provide site-based patrol staff. Most of the parks and gardens are permanently manned by Continental Landscapes staff who wear Westminster-branded uniform. This makes the staff easily identifiable to the public and assist in dealing with any situations that may arise.
The Parks contract is divide into two sections, the north and south, with the dividing line being Oxford Street.
The busy South section experiences a daily influx of tourists, business people and politicians. The traffic is always a problem which is compounded every time there is a demonstration at Parliament Square. Leicester Square falls within the South and is a very popular venue for film premieres. Summer concerts are held daily in the Victoria Embankment Gardens and many of the other parks host events, particularly during the summer months.
The north section of the contract is more tranquil. The nature of the parks and gardens tend to be centred on the local community. Many famous people are spotted in the gardens, ranging from Sir Paul McCartney, Barbara Windsor, Madonna, and Kate Moss. There are numerous playgrounds, for which Continental Landscapes do all the repairs and maintenance.
